Coiba National Park

Globally important Coiba National Park includes the largest island in Central America. This special reserve is one of the most awesome eco-destinations on the planet and a UNESCO World Heritage park.

Many hear of it but few get to visit. See also our dedicated Coiba Yacht page.

The tropical biodiversity is carefully protected and there are 240km of wilderness coastline to enjoy on the main island and smaller ones within the national park area. Journey time is around 3 hours to the closest point from Bocas del Mar.

Eighty percent of Coiba is untouched virgin forest, one of the largest areas in the world, thanks to it housing a prison settlement until 2004. It was Panama’s answer to Devil’s Island, and you can still visit some fascinating ruins slowly being reclaimed by the jungle.

Rich marine life and reefs abound and there are even land species that have evolved differently to the mainland, not surprising as Coiba is part of the same tectonic system as the Galapagos.

A national park permit to visit is required which we arrange for you on arrival (not included).
